The symbol of the full moon plays a huge part of the superstitions and stories surrounding Halloween.  Werewolves, witches, and warlocks are said to be at their strongest on the night of the full moon so many horror and supernatural movies include a full moon as their settings. Even though full moons are strongly associated with Halloween, it is very rare for one to actually fall on the same date.

A blue moon refers to the second full moon in a calendar month. Since the time between full moons is about the same length as a calendar month, it is rare for there to be two full moons in the same month. So rare in fact that for centuries people have used the phrase “once in a blue moon” to clarify that something happens or will happen very rarely.

All around the world, people will be able to view the rare blue moon on October 31st. The last time there was a full moon on Halloween visible worldwide was in 1944. No matter if you celebrate Halloween or not, go out and enjoy this rare celestial wonder!
